At Goalball Queensland, we are more than just an organisation; we are a passionate and dedicated family. Our journey began out of necessity, driven by the profound belief that athletes with vision impairments deserve the best possible support and resources. Previous administrations were unable to provide us with what we needed to create the optimal experience for our athletes. That’s when we took matters into our own hands, founding Goalball Queensland with a fervent commitment to making a difference.
Goalball is a unique and exhilarating team sport designed specifically for individuals with a vision impairment. Players rely on their heightened auditory and tactile senses as well as their strategic teamwork to score goals by rolling a ball with bells into the opposing team’s net. The sport’s origins can be traced back to 1946, when Austrian Hanz Lorenzen and German Sepp Reindle devised it as a rehabilitation activity for blinded veterans returning from World War II. Its simple yet profound concept of using sound to locate the ball and score goals quickly captured the interest of the visually impaired community, providing both a physical challenge and a means of social interaction.
